As a wedding photographer, I have seen many couples choose to have a first look on their big day. Around 95% of our clients opt for this option. As someone who has been photographing weddings for over a decade, I believe a first look is a must-have on your wedding day and has become a popular trend for several reasons.
A Moment of Privacy
Firstly, a first look allows the couple to enjoy a moment of privacy together prior to the ceremony. This can be very intimate and emotional, as the couple sees each other for the first time on their wedding day. It’s a chance for them to take a deep breath, calm their nerves, and remind each other why they’re getting married in the first place.
Allows for more photos without the rush
Secondly, a first look allows for more time for photography. After the first look, we can take portraits of the couple and their wedding party without feeling rushed. This means we can get more creative and take more photos in different locations. And since we’re not competing with the cocktail hour or reception, we can also take advantage of varying lighting conditions throughout the day.
A First Look can help you feel more relaxed on Your Wedding Day
Thirdly, a first look can help the couple feel more relaxed during the ceremony. By seeing each other beforehand, they have already had the chance to express their emotions and get used to being in front of the camera. This can make them feel more comfortable and present during the ceremony, making for better photos.
Of course, a first look is only a must-have on your wedding day for some. Not all couples feel it’s best for them or they want to continue a tradtion. It’s perfectly alright for some couples to wait until they see each other at the wedding ceremony. Do what you feel is best for you! But for those who choose to have a first look, it can be a beautiful and meaningful part of their wedding day. As a photographer, I always encourage my clients to consider it an option, and I’m happy to say that most of them do.
