Each summer we find ourselves in the field picking more berries than we could ever eat. It’s a tradition we started when Cole was an infant. This August we found ourselves on a weekend trip where we went Blueberry picking in Bayfield, Wisconsin. The homeschool Mom in me won’t let an outing like this go without a school unit to follow. My Mother was constantly creating learning experiences during our vacations when I was a child. I really admired how she went about integrating education into delightful activities.

A Homeschool Mini Unit while Blueberry Picking in Bayfield

Blueberry Homeschool Mini Unit

I like to print off worksheets and bring them on a clipboard with us to our activity. Sometimes I create the unit and sometimes I purchase them from individual artists on Etsy. A few shops I like are; Fun Mom Printables, Steph Hathaway Designs, Twig & Moth, & Simply A Love. For this blueberry-picking unit, we utilized our artistic skills to sketch a drawing of the blueberry bush. Labeling each piece accurately. Then we took the time to carefully bite a blueberry in half. Making a detailed drawing of a blueberries anatomy and labeling each part. We discussed a blueberries life cycle and how they are pollinated, made several recipes to eat, and used them to dye fabric.

Our time blueberry picking in Bayfield at Blue Vista Farm

We enjoyed our time collecting berries together, trying not to eat too many while in the patch. We observed bees buzzing and butterflies fluttering through the thicket. After blueberry picking, we walked the farm. We found a lush garden filled with inviting flowers and a small pond booming with wildlife. Cole found himself an arc made by the overhang of a row of trees. Where he thought it was the perfect path to run up and down while exploring. We ended our visit to the Blue Vista Farm in the store. A delightful shop filled with natural products and blueberry novelties. I found a line of handcrafted skincare that I adore, by Lea’s Organic Herbal Skin Care. Next time we find ourselves in Bayfield, stocking up is a must. Every product feels incredible on my easily irritated skin.
